One nabbed for stealing jewellery worth ₹78 lakh from Pavagadh temple’s sanctum sanctorum

Police have arrested an individual from Surat for stealing jewellery worth ₹78 lakh from the sanctum sanctorum (garbhgriha) of the Pavagadh temple in Panchmahal district which took place on October 27.

The thief had borrowed his brother-in-law’s motorcycle, distracted the security guard, and entered the temple through an open ventilation. He stole six gold necklaces and two gold-gilded crowns.

He then hid the stolen jewels in a wooden box in the cabin of a truck before returning to his hometown.

The police began their investigation after receiving a complaint from the temple trust. With the trust’s assistance, they reviewed CCTV footage.

Following this, the Panchmahal police alerted the Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operations Group (SOG), and officers from Halol town and rural police stations. A team was formed to search for the thief who had stolen the jewels. In total, 150 CCTV cameras surrounding the Pavagadh temple were examined.

In the footage, police identified a suspicious individual who had arrived on a motorcycle on October 27 and was seen engaging in suspicious activities at the temple.

After further investigation, the suspect was identified as Vidur Vasava, a resident of Umarpada, Surat. He was apprehended by the police in Surat.

The series of the theft was revealed after the police interrogated Vasava.

The police have now recovered the stolen jewellery from Vasava and have launched further investigations.
