IIT Gandhinagar to Host ₹190-Cr Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Training Hub

Gujarat will establish the Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar.

The ₹190-crore facility will focus on research, development, and training to prepare a skilled workforce for the country's fast-growing semiconductor ecosystem.

Focus on industry-ready talent

Once operational, SAMARTH will provide hands-on training and skill development for engineering students, faculty members, technicians, and industry professionals.

The hub has been designed to create workforce capable of working in advanced semiconductor fabrication facilities with practical, industry-oriented expertise.

Apart from research activities, the centre will conduct short-term certificate programmes, faculty development initiatives and awareness-building summer schools to familiarise students with semiconductor technologies at an early stage.

Engineering colleges across Gujarat to be connected

To expand its reach, IIT Gandhinagar is preparing to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with engineering colleges across Gujarat. These partnerships will enable students from affiliated institutions to access specialised semiconductor training at nominal fees.

Over 10,000 people to be trained in five years

SAMARTH has set an ambitious target of training more than 10,000 individuals over the next five years.

The proposed training includes:

  • 5,600 undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students
  • 1,500 technicians
  • 1,000 participants through certificate programmes
  • 230 faculty members
  • 230 industry professionals
  • 2,700 students through early-exposure initiatives

Jointly funded by Centre, Gujarat and IIT Gandhinagar

The ₹190-crore project is being jointly funded by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Gujarat Department of Science and Technology, and IIT Gandhinagar.

Preparatory work has already begun, with IIT Gandhinagar initiating procurement of equipment and appointing consultants for construction of the facility.
