Two Cousin Sisters Jump From Silvassa’s Rakholi Bridge, 17-Year-Old Dies on Impact

A 17-year-old girl died on the spot while her 16-year-old cousin was left battling for her life after both plummeted nearly 60 feet from the Rakholi Bridge onto a rocky riverbed in Dadra and Nagar Haveli on Wednesday afternoon.

Police identified the deceased as Bhumika Shankarbhai Dodiya (17) and her injured cousin as Rejina Arvindbhai Dhappasa (16), both residents of Dapada near Silvassa. Passers-by who witnessed the plunge immediately alerted local authorities and emergency teams.

Rescue workers rushed both teenagers to Namo Hospital in Silvassa, where doctors declared Bhumika dead on arrival. Rejina remains in critical condition under intensive care after suffering severe head and body trauma from the impact against the dry river rocks.

Initial police inquiries revealed that both girls were in relationships with different young men, a matter their families had recently discovered. Relatives had reportedly assured both teens that their marriages would be arranged once they attained legal adulthood.

The sudden decision to jump despite family approval has left investigators searching for answers. Authorities have registered a case of accidental death and are questioning family members and close acquaintances to uncover the underlying trigger.

Safety Nets Demanded as Rakholi Bridge Turns Suicide Hotspot

Wednesday’s tragedy has renewed sharp public outcry over safety infrastructure along the busy Silvassa-Khanvel road route. Local residents point out that Rakholi Bridge has turned into an unmonitored suicide hotspot due to recurring jump incidents over recent years.

Community leaders and locals are now demanding immediate installation of high safety fencing along the bridge ledges to block access and prevent further loss of life.
