Updated: Jul 21st, 2024

Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel died due to dehydration while on foot patrol along the international Kutch border between India and Pakistan near Harami Nala creek.

The incident occurred near the Lakhpat border pillar number 1136. At around 5 am on July 19, when a team of six personnel, led by Assistant Commandant Vishnu Deo, set out for foot patrol. By noon, they were in the Harami Nala area of Lakhpat taluka, where they got stuck in a muddy creek.

The six personnel, including the assistant commandant, were trapped in the mud. Efforts were made to rescue them, but due to a lack of water, they suffered from dehydration.

Upon receiving information about the incident on the afternoon of July 19, a team arrived with water supplies, ORS, and medications. The personnel were quickly transported to the Community Health Centre in Khavda, Bhuj for treatment.

Assistant Commandant Deo (45) from Bihar and Head Constable Dayal Ram from Uttarakhand were pronounced dead ahead of treatment. Both the personnel hailed from the 59th BSF battalion.

In the creek area of Lakhpat Taluka, patrolling personnel face challenging conditions, often sinking into mud up to their knees. They have encountered incidents of snake and scorpion bites. Recently, concerns have escalated due to deaths from dehydration after getting stuck in the mud.

The creek area starts near Koteshwar in Kutch. Due to numerous irregular creeks, this area has unique geographical features. There are mangrove forests, muddy land, shallow water, and deep water in various places. Due to the mud and wetland, BSF personnel occasionally face accidents.
