Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has pointed out the stark contrast in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier comments about the Indian rupee and its current state. Ramesh took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to highlight Modi’s past remarks about the dollar and the rupee’s value after  he first became prime minister.

In his post, Ramesh recalled that when Modi assumed office in 2014, he was nearing 64 years of age, and the rupee stood at 58.88 to the dollar. The prime minister had allegedly made several comments about the dollar’s value and the state of the economy at that time, even drawing comparisons between his age and the dollar rate.

However, Ramesh pointed out that as Modi approaches 75, the dollar rate has soared to an all-time high of 86.71, with the rupee hitting new lows daily. He expressed concern about the declining rupee and the risks it poses to the economy.

Ramesh’s post emphasised how the falling value of the rupee against the dollar is amplifying currency risks, making it a pressing issue for the Indian economy. His comments come amid growing concerns over the weakening of the Indian currency in global markets.
