After Meta, Google also makes away with fact-check in search results

Google has informed the European Union (EU) that it will not implement fact-checking in its search results, citing that its search engine already provides mostly accurate results, as per reports.

This response comes after the EU’s request for content to be fact-checked under its Code of Practice, which aims to curb the spread of misinformation, particularly after the challenges posed by fake news during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to reports from US media, Google has declined to add fact-checking features to their search results, arguing that the process would be impractical.

The EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into effect in 2022, was introduced to combat misinformation such as fake vaccine news, false healthcare information, and conspiracy theories that had widespread impacts during the pandemic.

The European Commission highlighted the importance of regulating online platforms to ensure safer and more reliable information reaches the public.

Before this, Meta also had shown interest in doing away with fact-checking, replacing it with community-based checking like X (formerly Twitter), where users note the validity of a post.
