Chandipura Virus: First case reported in Ahmedabad, 22 positive cases in Gujarat

The first positive case of Chandipura Virus is reported from Ahmedabad's Sabarmati area where a 6-year-old child is admitted to a multispeciality hospital in Chandkheda.

So far, 3 negative and 1 positive Chandipura cases have been reported in Ahmedabad, while the results of 3 cases are still pending.

An 11-year-old girl from Sardar Nagar has died of a suspicious Chandipura case, her test results are not received yet. Currently, two patients are undergoing treatment in a private hospital. Suspected patients of Chandipura in Sardar Nagar and Amraiwadi are currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital, both aged 11 years.

Meanwhile, there are no patients of Chandipura at Asarwa Civil Hospital. On the other hand, a suspected case of Chandipura has been reported in Sola Civil Hospital. Dr Ghosha Pandav from Sola Civil Hospital said, “A 6-year-old girl with fever and convulsions has been admitted to Sola Civil Hospital.” Reports of this girl were sent to Gandhinagar on July 20.

The condition of the girl is stable now and Chandipura supportive medications are given to her.

Chandipura in Gujarat

The death toll of Chandipura and suspected Chandipura Virus has increased to 36 in Gujarat.

Children from Panchmahal are affected maximum with a total of five deaths reported from the district.

On July 22, four more cases of suspected viral encephalitis (suspected Chandipura) were reported in Gujarat, bringing the total number of cases to 88.

These include 9 cases from Sabarkantha, 6 from Aravalli-Kheda, 2 each from Chhotaudepur, Dahod, Narmada, Mahisagar, Vadodara and Rajkot, 5 from Gandhinagar, Jamnagar and Mehsana, 4 from Rajkot, Morbi and Banaskantha, 3 from Gandhinagar and Surendranagar, 7 from Ahmedabad, 11 from Panchmahal, and 1 each from Bhavnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Vadodara and Kutch.

According to reports, a 2-year-old girl from Nikava village in Kalavad taluka of Jamnagar tested positive for Chandipura and is currently undergoing treatment at Rajkot Civil Hospital. 

Previously, a 13-year-old boy from Morbi succumbed to a positive Chandipura case.

A child from Khambhalia, Jamnagar who was admitted to the hospital has died during treatment. It has been confirmed that the child was infected with the Chandipura virus. An 11-month-old child from a labour family in Chuda taluka of Surendranagar district was admitted to the hospital with suspected symptoms and his report was declared positive on July 22.

According to reports from Gondal, a 6-month-old boy and a 2-month-old girl from a labourer family in Ransiki village in Gondal died after suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting.

It is suspected that they were infected with the Chandipura virus and their samples have been sent to the Pune laboratory. On the other hand, a 12-year-old girl from the Sachin area of Surat, who was infected with the Chandipura virus, died on the morning of July 22 at the New Civil Hospital during treatment.

Experts’ team reaches Gujarat

A three-member team is sent by the Centre to investigate the rising number of cases of Chandipura in Gujarat. The team includes members from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD).
