AMC makes four-way waste segregation mandatory in Ahmedabad after SC order

Following directions issued by the Supreme Court, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has implemented new waste management guidelines making segregation of garbage compulsory for all residential and commercial properties in the city. Under the new rules, citizens will now have to separate waste into four categories: wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste, and electronic waste (e-waste), before handing it over to door-to-door garbage collection vehicles.
AMC has warned that strict action will be taken against those who fail to segregate waste properly. The rules have come into force nationwide from April 1, and all local self-government bodies across the country have been instructed to ensure complete implementation within 18 months. Throwing or burning garbage on roads, open spaces, drains, or water bodies will now be treated as a legal offence.
According to the new provisions, all residential and commercial units across Ahmedabad’s zones and wards will have to follow waste segregation norms strictly.
Wet waste includes kitchen waste, fruits, and vegetables, while dry waste includes paper, plastic, glass, and metal items. Sanitary waste such as used diapers and sanitary pads must be wrapped properly before disposal, while electronic and hazardous household waste will also need to be disposed of separately.
AMC has also made on-site waste processing mandatory for ‘Bulk Waste Generators,’ which include establishments with a built-up area of 20,000 square metres or more, daily water consumption above 40,000 litres, or daily waste generation exceeding 100 kilograms.
Hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, educational institutions, religious organisations, government offices, large residential societies, and commercial establishments have been included under this category.
The civic body stated that the move is aimed at reducing the burden on landfill sites and improving overall waste management efficiency in Ahmedabad.
