Rumble strips planned for Ahmedabad’s SG Highway to curb accidents

Updated: Mar 6th, 2024

A 44.5 km-long stretch of SG Highway (Sarkhej-Gandhinagar) connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, a part of NH 8C, is an accident-prone zone.

In a bid to reduce road accidents on the stretch, rumble strip technology is set to be installed on SG Highway.

A meeting of the Gujarat Road Safety Authority (GRSA) in Gandhinagar has suggested developing one highway in each city and district of the state as a model road from a safety point of view.

Simple technology to avoid accidents, which has already been adopted on highways in megacities like Bengaluru and Mumbai, rumble strips will be installed on the SG Highway to prevent road accidents.

They keep drivers safe by alerting them if they’re accidentally leaving their lane or veering off the road. In cases like a driver falling asleep or distracted, or starting to wander off the road, the rumble strips are there to give a nudge to wake up and pay attention.

The authorities were suggested to identify “black spots” on the highways where road accidents are on the rise and initiate efforts to reduce accidents in those spots across all the roads in Gujarat.

It was this infamous stretch where a Tathya Patel’s speeding car rammed over onlookers and claimed the lives of nine last July.

‘Scheme for Good Samaritan’ was also discussed in the meeting, where citizens will be encouraged to save the lives of victims of any fatal accident.

The meeting also witnessed prize distribution for the Road Safety Award, where, in the voluntary organisation category, Banaskantha’s Naisargik Trust won first prize and a second prize was given to Roger Road Accident and Prevention Organisation (Roger RAPO) in Rajkot.

In the city-directed road safety committee category, Surat stood first, Rajkot at second, and Banaskantha at third.
