Rain Eases but Ahmedabad's Flood Cleanup Continues, 18 Societies Still Waterlogged

Although heavy rainfall has eased over the past two days, the aftermath of flooding continues to affect several parts of Ahmedabad, with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) continuing large-scale dewatering, road restoration and sanitation operations across the city.

As per reports, pumping operations are still underway in 18 flood-affected societies and residential clusters, while civic teams remain deployed to clear waterlogged areas and restore normalcy.

Waterlogging cleared from most affected locations

According to AMC, between July 23 and July 26, the civic body received 476 complaints of waterlogging on major roads and public spaces, of which 474 have been resolved.

The corporation also received 456 complaints of rainwater entering homes in societies and residential colonies. Officials said 438 complaints have been addressed, while work is continuing in the remaining locations.

Of the 148 identified waterlogging hotspots across the city, 140 have been cleared, with restoration work continuing at the remaining eight locations. Pumping operations are also ongoing at two non-residential waterlogging sites.

4,000 tonnes of sludge and debris removed

As floodwaters receded, AMC launched an extensive cleanliness drive to remove sludge, garbage and debris that had clogged roads and stormwater catchpits.

As per reports, civic teams have so far cleared around 4,000 tonnes of mud and waste from roads and public spaces across Ahmedabad.

Road repair work underway

Officials said damaged roads are being repaired using temporary methods suitable for the monsoon season.

According to City Engineer Rishi Pandya of the Road and Bridge Project Department, fresh resurfacing cannot be undertaken during the rains. Instead, AMC is filling potholes using wet mix, cold mix and hot mix materials, while paver blocks are being used to repair larger potholes during periods of intermittent rainfall.

Health department intensifies disease prevention measures

With floodwaters remaining in some areas for two to three days, concerns have reportedly grown over possible contamination of drinking water and the spread of waterborne diseases.

To address the risk, the AMC Health Department has increased chlorine testing across all seven zones. Civic teams are also carrying out door-to-door distribution of chlorine tablets, water quality checks and fogging operations, particularly in low-lying areas and densely populated residential localities.

Senior officials monitoring situation

As per reports, the Mayor, Municipal Commissioner and other senior civic officials have been conducting field visits to monitor relief, restoration and public health measures as the city continues its recovery from the recent spell of heavy rainfall.
