The Centre has maintained that there is no verified evidence linking E20 petrol to widespread engine damage or vehicle failures. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on July 22, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said older vehicles designed for E10 fuel may experience only a marginal 3–5% reduction in fuel efficiency, while factors such as driving habits and vehicle maintenance also affect mileage.
The government further stated that E20 offers benefits including a higher octane rating, improved anti-knock performance, better combustion and smoother acceleration. Earlier this month, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also dismissed claims that E20 damages vehicles, challenging critics to cite a single verified case and describing such allegations as part of "paid campaigns".
