No new govt medical college opened in Gujarat since 1995

In a question asked by Congress MLA and leader of the congress party, Amit Chavda, regarding newly opened government and medical colleges in the last two years, health minister Rushikesh Patel replied that no new government medical college has been opened by the state government in the last two years.

Data also reveals that no government medical colleges have been opened by the state government.

In a written reply, the minister said that in 2022 and 2023, no new colleges were opened by the state government. 

While five Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) run colleges and four private colleges opened this year. There are six government medical colleges in Gujarat out of which a women’s college opened in 1995.

He replied that there are 1,400 graduation seats, 1,329 seats post graduation in government medical colleges, 2,100 graduation and 114 post graduation in GMERS, 3,500 seats of graduation and 1,318 post graduation seats in private colleges.

Chavda in his supplementary question asked whether the state government wants to change the fee structure of GMERS colleges like government medical colleges to which the minister said that the government used to provide scholarships and financial aid to needy students and who are capable to pay the fees, such students have to pay it.

Patel said students who are meritorious are given admission in medical colleges by GMERS. He added that ₹9,531 cr has been spent  by the state government out of which only ₹2,216 cr has been received as fee. Out of this, the government has offered fellowship too with a motive that no eligible or needy student’s dream remains unfulfilled. 

Fee structures in these colleges are:

Annual fee of ₹25,000 for graduation and annual ₹30,000 for post graduation in government medical colleges, ₹3,30,00 for GMERS-run colleges and different fees by private medical colleges in the state. 

Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS) has the highest annual fee ₹17.10 lakhs and lowest annual fee is at Smt NHL municipal medical college at ₹3.34 lakhs.
