Gujarat Monsoon Update: Heavy Rain Lashes Valsad and Navsari; Normal Life Disrupted as Pardi Records Over 4 Inches of Downpour

A relentless spell of monsoon rain battered parts of South Gujarat today, with Valsad and Navsari bearing the brunt of the heavy downpour. Data released by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar reveals that Pardi taluka in Valsad district recorded the highest rainfall across the state, registering 107 mm (4.21 inches) between 6.00 am and 4.00 pm.

The sudden and intense spell has triggered waterlogging in low-lying areas, causing significant disruptions to vehicular movement and daily activities in the coastal region.

South Gujarat Battered by Incessant Showers

The SEOC report highlights that the weather system remained heavily concentrated over South Gujarat through the morning and afternoon hours. Close behind Pardi, the main Valsad taluka recorded a substantial 105 mm (4.13 inches) of rain, with steady precipitation observed throughout the day, particularly peaking between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm.

Neighbouring Navsari district also faced intense cloudbursts. Khergam taluka in Navsari registered 99 mm (3.9 inches) of rain, with a significant 49 mm chunk of that total dumping within just two hours between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm. Other parts of Navsari, including Jalalpore (86 mm), Gandevi (80 mm), Chikhli (73 mm), and the Navsari taluka centre (67 mm), faced heavy spells that left local administrative teams on alert.

Moderate Spells in Surat and Tapi

While Valsad and Navsari saw the heaviest accumulations, other districts in the region experienced moderate to light showers. In Surat district, Mahuva taluka recorded 46 mm of rainfall, while Palsana saw 33 mm. The tribal-dominated Tapi district also witnessed scattered downpours, with Valod logging 40 mm and Vyara recording 21 mm before the intensity visualised a drop in the afternoon.

Further south, Vaghai in the Dangs district noted 30 mm of rainfall, adding to the inflow of local water bodies in the hilly terrains.

Light Showers Across Saurashtra and Central Gujarat

The rainfall remained largely scattered and mild across the rest of the state. In the Saurashtra region, Talaja in Bhavnagar received 20 mm, while Visavadar in Junagadh recorded 11 mm.
Central and North Gujarat districts experienced negligible to very light drizzle.

Places like Shehera in Panchmahals (18 mm), Garbada in Dahod (17 mm), and Virpur in Mahisagar (15 mm) reported brief spells. Major urban centres including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Rajkot only recorded trace rainfall ranging between 1 mm to 4 mm during the ten-hour window.

With the weather department forecasting continued monsoon activity across coastal Gujarat over the next 24 hours, local authorities in Valsad and Navsari have urged citizens to exercise caution near low-lying waterlogged roads and underpasses.
