Major Train Mishap Averted as Overhead Wire Snaps on Tata-Howrah Steel Express in Jharkhand

A major rail accident was averted on Sunday morning after an overhead electric wire snapped and fell onto the roof of the Tata-Howrah Steel Express while it was crossing a railway bridge over the Subarnarekha River in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district, officials said.

The incident brought the train to a halt on the bridge, disrupting services on the Tata-Howrah section. No injuries or casualties were reported.

Incident Occurred Near Galudih

According to railway officials, the incident took place at around 7 a.m. near Chandrekha village under the Galudih police station limits at the Ghatsila railway bridge.

Officials said the overhead electric wire snapped while the train was travelling from Tatanagar to Howrah, immediately disrupting the power supply and forcing the train to stop.

Passengers said they heard a loud sound moments before sparks were seen from the overhead line. The wire then fell onto the roof of the train, causing panic among those on board.

Railway authorities said built-in safety mechanisms prevented a more serious incident.

Passengers Walked to Nearby Station

With the train stranded on the bridge for a prolonged period, several passengers got off and walked along the railway track towards Galudih. Many later reached the nearby national highway and arranged alternative transport to continue their journey.

Restoration Work Under way

Senior railway officials, technical teams, the Traction Rolling Distribution (TRD) unit and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel reached the site soon after the incident.

The power supply to the affected section was suspended before repair work began.

Railway authorities said services on the Tata-Howrah route remained affected due to the snapped overhead wire. Train operations will resume only after repairs are completed and the section is certified safe for movement.
