Victims of the Morbi bridge collapse incident have been awaiting compensation for the past two years.

Gujarat High Court had direted the accused, Oreva Group, to form a tripartite agreement (a legal agreement between three parties) to compensate the victims as soon as possible.

The bench, headed by Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi, had ordered the Oreva Group, which had constructed the bridge, to create the agreement between the company, the trust, and the victims. The court also stated that no further delays would be allowed in the process.

The terms to be mentioned by the company were provided by the court, and some of them were suggested by the accused company’s lawyer, but the court declined them.

The company’s lawyer also informed that a fixed deposit of ₹9 lakh had been made for the marriage expenses of the nine victims. One victim had been paid ₹1.07 lakh for her medical expenses.

Additionally, the company had proposed to pay ₹2 lakh to a severely injured woman, who had requested ₹8 lakh in compensation. She had been unable to attend her job in Mumbai for eight months and had sought the compensation.

The high court made it clear that the company should provide the amount requested. The HC has also sought proof of the company’s monthly income. It further mentioned that it will issue a written order on the matter soon.

In the Morbi bridge collapse in October 2022, a total of 135 people lost their lives, and many others were injured. A special trust was created under the guidance of the Gujarat High Court to provide financial assistance and fulfil the needs of the victims. The high court has also appointed two lawyers as court monitors in this case.
