In a shocking incident from Surat, a 20-year-old girl ended her life on Mar 8 citing ‘addiction to mobile’ as the reason behind taking the extreme step.

The girl, identified as Vishakha Rana, was a resident of Moti Chhipwad, in the city’s Gopipura area.

As per the family, “She used to say, ‘I can see Google; Google has stopped me from eating; Google tells me to die’. She even mentioned seeing the mobile phone when they took her to a temple.”

Vishakha, the daughter of Narendra Rana, a zari worker, was addicted to her mobile phone for a long time and spent hours playing games and watching videos, say her family members.

In one instance, her face became crooked after doing intense facial exercises found through Google on her phone. She was immediately taken to a private hospital for treatment. However, after seeing no improvement in her health, the family opted for her psychiatric treatment two months ago.

For the past month, her phone has been taken away.

She was alone at home, when the tragic incident took place.

The Athwa police have registered a case of accidental death and have sent the body for a post-mortem to the city’s New Civil Hospital. The police are also recording statements from the family members.
