Jewellery and cash worth nearly ₹3 lakh were allegedly stolen from a woman's handbag while she was travelling on a crowded Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) bus, police said.

The complainant, Rajeshji Dungarji Kalal (58), a tea stall owner from Mumbai, told police that he and his wife, Mohiniji, had travelled to Rajasthan for family functions before arriving in Ahmedabad on 2 July to visit relatives.

According to the complaint, the couple left a relative's home in Ghatlodia on 3 July to visit another family member in Narol. At around 5.55 pm, they boarded a red AMTS bus from the Satadhar Crossroads BRTS bus stand after purchasing tickets for Narol.

Police said the bus was heavily crowded, forcing many passengers to stand. As the bus neared the Bhuyangdev Crossroads BRTS bus stand between 6.10 pm and 6.20 pm, Mohiniji noticed that the zip of her handbag had been opened.

After alighting from the bus, she checked the bag and discovered that three wallets kept inside were missing.

The stolen property included a gold mangalsutra weighing about three tolas, two gold bangles weighing approximately one tola, a gold ring weighing around half a tola, two silver bangles weighing about 50 grams, and ₹15,000 in cash. The total value of the stolen jewellery and cash has been estimated at ₹3 lakh.

Based on the complaint, Ghatlodia Police have registered a case of theft against an unidentified accused under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police are examining CCTV footage from the AMTS route and nearby BRTS stations, while investigators are also questioning potential witnesses in an effort to identify the suspect. Further investigation is underway.
