Five buffaloes allegedly being transported illegally for slaughter were rescued and a Mahindra Bolero pickup truck was seized after the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled during a police interception in Ahmedabad's Danilimda area, police said.

The incident took place at around 12.15 am on August 7 on the public road outside Lalji Parmar Hall.

Driver Escapes After Abandoning Vehicle

According to police, a surveillance team on night patrol received specific intelligence that a Bolero pickup carrying live buffaloes was heading towards the Meldi Mata Temple area.

Acting on the tip-off, officers, accompanied by independent witnesses, laid a trap near Lalji Parmar Hall. When the vehicle arrived, police signalled the driver to stop. However, the driver allegedly attempted to flee before abandoning the pickup truck and escaping from the spot.

Buffaloes Transported Without Permits

During the inspection, police found five buffaloes, each aged around seven to eight years, tied with short ropes beneath a tarpaulin.

Investigators said the animals were allegedly being transported without the mandatory permits, veterinary certification or adequate arrangements for fodder and water, in violation of animal welfare regulations. Police suspect the buffaloes were being taken for illegal slaughter.

Property Worth ₹3.2 Lakh Seized

Police seized the five buffaloes, collectively valued at around ₹70,000, along with the Bolero pickup truck worth approximately ₹2.5 lakh. The total value of the seized property is estimated at about ₹3.2 lakh.

The rescued animals have been shifted to the Geetaben Rabari Trust for care and safekeeping.

FIR Registered, Search for Driver Underway

Danilimda Police have registered an FIR against the unidentified driver under relevant provisions of the Gujarat Animal Preservation Act, 2017, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the BPMC Act.

Police said efforts are underway to identify and trace the absconding driver, while further investigation is in progress to establish the source and intended destination of the livestock.
