Tragedy at New Civil Hospital: First-Year Resident Doctor Found Dead in Surat PG Hostel

A wave of shock and grief has swept through Surat’s medical community following the suicide of a 30-year-old resident doctor within the New Civil Hospital (NCH) campus. Dr. Harsh Pandya, a first-year postgraduate student in the Department of Microbiology, was found dead inside his hostel room on Sunday.

Dr. Pandya, an unmarried native of Modasa in Aravalli district, had failed to report for his scheduled shift earlier in the day. Concerned by his absence, senior faculty members attempted to contact him by phone, only to find his mobile switched off. A fellow resident was dispatched to check his room in the PG hostel, where they found the door locked from the inside.

Hostel Room Door Broken Open After Doctor Misses Shift

Despite repeated knocks and calls from colleagues, there was no response from inside the quarters. Hostel staff and security personnel subsequently broke down the door, discovering Dr. Pandya suspended from the ceiling fan.

The discovery prompted an immediate response from hospital administration and local authorities. NCH Superintendent Dr. Parul Vadgama and a team from the Khatodara Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted.

Police Launch Investigation as Medical Fraternity Mourns

Khatodara police have filed an accidental death report and initiated a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The body was shifted to the mortuary for a postmortem examination to confirm the official cause of death, while police officers conducted an inquest (panchnama) of the room. Investigators are reviewing his recent communication logs and speaking with colleagues to determine if personal or workplace stress contributed to the decision.
