Ahmedabad Flood Woes Return Within Days as Fresh Rains Submerge Bopal, Ghuma and Other Areas

Fresh showers brought back waterlogging troubles to several parts of Ahmedabad on Monday, barely three days after floodwaters from last week’s heavy rain had receded. Areas including Bopal, Ghuma, Shela, Memco, Helmet Circle and Gurukul witnessed renewed flooding after 1 to 2 inches of rain fell within two hours during the morning peak period, disrupting traffic and raising concerns over the city’s drainage system.

The rainfall, which began around 6 am, affected commuters heading to work as roads turned waterlogged and vehicles moved through flooded stretches. Although the rain stopped later in the morning, water levels gradually declined in most areas.

Bopal, Ghuma Among Worst-Hit Areas Again

The north-west zone of Ahmedabad recorded the heaviest impact, with areas such as Science City, Thaltej, Sola, Bodakdev, Ghatlodia, Gota, Ognaj, Chandlodia and Memnagar receiving around 1.5 to 2 inches of rain.

In the south-west zone, locations including Jodhpur, Bakrol, Bopal, Satellite, Shivranjani, Shilaj, Ghuma, Maktampura, Vejalpur, Anandnagar, Corporate Road and Sarkhej received between 1 and 1.5 inches of rainfall.

Several low-lying societies and internal roads were flooded once again, leaving residents anxious about repeated water accumulation despite comparatively moderate rainfall.

Questions Raised Over Ahmedabad Drainage System

While most parts of the city received only around half an inch to one inch of rain, residents questioned why multiple roads and residential areas faced waterlogging.

Citizens raised concerns over the effectiveness of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) drainage infrastructure, pointing out that flooding has become a recurring issue even after short spells of heavy rain.

The city recorded an average rainfall of around one inch on Monday, with Thaltej and Science City receiving the highest rainfall at nearly two inches. Ahmedabad has already received around 56 per cent of its seasonal rainfall.

Lightning Strike Damages TV Sets in Shahpur

A lightning strike in Qadri’s Chali area of Halim in Shahpur early Monday morning caused damage inside homes.

Residents reported that the strike damaged television sets and set-top boxes, with locals saying electrical equipment was blown out due to the impact.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

AMC Commissioner Visits Bopal After Amit Shah Takes Note

Following reports of severe waterlogging in Bopal, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani visited the affected areas for the third time.

The visit came after Union Home Minister and Gandhinagar Lok Sabha MP Amit Shah took note of the rain-related damage in the Bopal area.

During the inspection, the AMC commissioner reviewed the situation with officials on the ground and issued directions for faster water drainage. Officials were instructed to maintain continuous monitoring and work towards a permanent solution to recurring waterlogging problems.

Previous Flooding Raised Concerns

The latest visit has drawn attention because of earlier flooding incidents in Ahmedabad.

Last year, Madhumalati Society in East Ahmedabad was severely affected by waterlogging, where one person died. At the time, floodwaters were so high that an ambulance could not enter the area and the deceased had to be transported on a vehicle to reach emergency services.

Residents are now demanding long-term measures instead of temporary drainage efforts as repeated flooding continues to affect daily life across the city.
