Fatal Sabarmati Riverfront Crash Claims Lives of Minor Siblings in Ahmedabad as Shocking CCTV Footage Emerges

A quiet Monday morning turned into a tragic spectacle on the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad when two minor siblings lost their lives in a fatal moped crash. The horrific accident, which occurred near the National Institute of Design (NID) on the river's west bank, has once again exposed the grave dangers of underage driving and excessive speed on the city's open stretches.

The incident unfolded at around 8:12 am on July 27 as 17-year-old Kavya Mehta was riding a moped with his sister, Jaina Mehta, sitting pillion. According to preliminary findings by the Riverfront Traffic Police, Kavya lost control of the two-wheeler while travelling at high speed, causing the moped to skid violently onto the road just 50 metres behind the NID campus. The impact threw both teenagers off the vehicle, leaving them critically injured on the pavement.

Distracting Speed and Fatal Impact Captured on Camera

Paramedics and police rushed to the scene shortly after passers-by raised the alarm. Kavya sustained fatal injuries on impact and was pronounced dead at the spot. Emergency responders rushed his sister Jaina to the nearby Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Hospital, where doctors fought to save her life.

However, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment later in the day.

Traffic officials confirmed that CCTV footage capturing the exact moment of the crash has surfaced and is under detailed technical review. Initial analysis of the video indicates that no other vehicle collided with or cut off the siblings' moped. The vehicle appears to have lost traction purely due to high speed before skidding along the corridor.

Investigation Focuses on Speeding and Underage Driving

Police revealed that both victims were residents of the nearby Navrangpura neighborhood. Investigators from the Riverfront Traffic Police station have impounded the damaged moped and sent the bodies of both minors for post-mortem examination.

Authorities are examining whether road conditions, mechanical failure, or reckless speed played the primary role in the loss of control. Officers are also reviewing surrounding camera feeds along the riverfront stretch to establish the moped's speed profile prior to the crash.

The tragic loss has sent shockwaves through Navrangpura, prompting local traffic police to reiterate strict warnings to parents against allowing underage teenagers to operate motor vehicles on public roads. Further inquiries into the sequence of events remain ongoing.
