Historic Night in Eugene as India Equal Best-Ever U20 World Athletics Medal Tally

India’s rising track-and-field stars produced a historic double-podium display at the U20 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, as high jumper Basant secured a landmark silver and long jumper Shahnavaz Khan claimed bronze. The dual success brought India’s total to three medals at the ongoing championships, equalling their best-ever performance set in 2021 with a full day of competition still remaining.

High Jump Heroics in Oregon

Basant, a 19-year-old native of Ganganagar, Rajasthan, made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to claim a medal in a high jump event at any world-level competition. Equalling his personal best clearance of 2.21 metres, Basant displayed exceptional composure throughout the competition.

After sailing cleanly over 2.06m, 2.12m, and 2.17m, his first-attempt clearance at 2.21m proved decisive. Although the top three jumpers all cleared the identical height, the Indian athlete secured silver on countback mechanics. Algeria's Younes Ayachi took gold, while Britain's Otis Poole claimed bronze.

Khan Claims Landmark Long Jump Bronze

Shortly after, Shahnavaz Khan etched his name into the record books by becoming the first Indian male long jumper to earn a world-level medal. Overcoming an unsettled start, Khan produced a leap of 7.84 metres in the third round to launch himself into medal contention.

He demonstrated remarkable consistency under pressure by backing it up with a 7.83-metre mark in the fifth round to solidify his podium finish. Italy's Daniele Inzoli took gold with a jump of 7.97m, narrowly edging Australia's Liam McGroder (7.96m).

Relay Qualification and Medal Overview

The twin podium finishes follow Friday’s silver medal performance by 19-year-old Uttar Pradesh thrower Ashish Yadav in the men's javelin throw. Yadav became the first Indian to win a U20 World Championship javelin medal since Neeraj Chopra’s gold in 2016.

With one day remaining in Oregon, India sit poised to record their highest-ever medal haul at a U20 World Athletics Championships, underscoring a dramatic surge in the nation's technical field event pipeline.
