NRI demands dowry, seeks divorce from Vadodara woman post-Marriage
Updated: Apr 4th, 2024
In a shocker, a woman’s marriage turned into a disaster when her husband, who had gone to Canada, did not show up for a remarriage with fanfare over the dowry disputes between their families.
Nirali Padhiyar, a resident of Vadodara’s Manjalpur, was married to Canada-based mechanical engineer Nishant.
Nishant came to Nirali’s home in Vadodara for 2-3 days, and both families decided to set up the wedding on Feb 22, 2023.
They registered their marriage and entrusted Nishant with her passport and documents for immigration filing in Canada. After Nishant went to Canada on Mar 9, 2023, his parents, Chandrika and Khushal (residents of Amreli), went to Nirali’s home, according to a complaint filed by Nirali.
They emphasised organising a remarriage with all the pomp on Feb 17, 2024. At first, Nirali’s father refused, but due to pressure from her in-laws, he finally agreed and booked a party plot in Vadodara.
Preparations for catering, wedding attire, and photography were booked.
Dowry demands
According to the complaint, Nirali’s in-laws asked for money to go abroad, a car, and jewellery from her father. However, their behaviour changed after Nirali’s father refused to oblige.
Moreover, after Oct 12, 2023, her husband started ignoring her and blocked her number.
Her maternal uncle and parents visited Nishant’s parents before the wedding. However, her mother-in-law reiterated her dowry demand, asserting that only after fulfilment would further discussions proceed. She also boasted of her influence with the police.
Shattered marriage
Despite all the preparations, Nirali’s in-laws did not show up at the wedding on the pre-decided date of Feb 17, 2024.
Meanwhile, her husband, Nishant, terminated her Canada immigration application and also changed her email ID and password without informing her. Now, her marriage stands on her husband’s demand to get a divorce.
Based on the complaint, the Manjalpur police registered a case against Nishant Padhiya and his parents.
