Indian student from Telangana shot dead in US

Incidents of attacks on Indian students in the US are continuously increasing. A student from Telangana’s Rangareddy district, who went to the US for studies, was shot dead.
The deceased has been identified as G Praveen (26), a postgraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who worked part-time in a store.
Victim’s family in shock
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, after which US authorities informed Praveen’s family. The victim’s father, Raghavulu, said, “I received a WhatsApp call at 5 am, but I didn’t answer it. Later in the morning, when I saw the missed call, I sent a voice message. When I didn’t get a response even after an hour, I started getting worried and then called my son’s friends. That’s when I found out that my son had gone to work part-time at a store, and during a robbery, the robbers shot him, leading to his death.”
The victim’s cousin Arun stated that Praveen’s friends informed them that he had been shot multiple times. However, some people say that he was murdered inside a store by unknown assailants. So far, the exact cause of his death has not been confirmed. US authorities have said that the exact cause will be known only after the post-mortem.
Praveen had completed his B Tech in Hyderabad and went to the US in 2023 to pursue a master’s.
“We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a Post-graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen’s family and the University, helping them with all possible support. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends of the departed,” wrote the consulate general of India in Chicago on X.
Third such incident in five months
This is not the first murder of a student from Telangana in the US. In the past five months, this is the third such case. In November 2024, a student from Khammam district was shot dead, and in January 2025, a student from Hyderabad was also killed in a shooting.
