Massive voting in NE states; dull numbers in UP, Maha for LS polls phase 2

Polling in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections has concluded today, and the turnout numbers are out for the states till 5 p.m.

The elections took place on 88 constituencies in 13 states including Kerala, Karnataka, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jammu Kashmir.

67% polling in Kerala

Voters in Kerala braved the heat to head out to polling stations in the single-day “festival of democracy” in the southern state today, with a 67% turnout recorded for the state’s 20 Lok Sabha seats till the closing of polls at 6 p.m. but long queues of voters still present.

The three political fronts that are fighting it out are the ruling CPI(M)-led Left, the Congress-led UDF and the BJP-led NDA.

70.66% polling in Assam

Assam recorded 70.66% voting in the five Lok Sabha seats that went to the polls today.

Darrang-Udalguri Lok Sabha seat witnessed the highest voter turnout of 72.99% while Silchar parliamentary constituency recorded 65.57% voting, which was the lowest in the five constituencies.

Meanwhile, Nagaon recorded 71.84%, Karimganj 71.12%, and Diphu witnessed 69.12% voter turnout in today’s polling.

53.51% polling in Maharashtra

A voter turnout of 53.51% was recorded till 5 p.m. for the eight Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra where voting was held today.

Wardha registered the highest polling percentage at 56.66%, followed by Amravati (54.50%), Yavatmal-Washim (54.04%), Parbhani (53.79%), Akola (52.49%), Nanded (52.47%), Buldhana (52.24%), and Hingoli (52.03%).

76% polling on lone Manipur seat

Over 76% of the around 4.85 lakh voters today exercised their franchise in the remaining part of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, whose major part went to polls in the first phase on Apr 19, said officials.

Election and police officials separately said that no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the tribal reserved constituency, spread across eight hilly districts - Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tamenglong, Noney, Senapati, Jiribam, Pherzawl, and Tengnoupal.

Today’s polling was held in the remaining 13 assembly segments under the Outer Manipur parliamentary seat, where voting for the 15 other assembly segments was held in the first phase on Apr 19 along with the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat.

Tripura (1 seat) - 77.97%

West Bengal (3 seats) - 71.84%

Chhattisgarh (3 seats) - 72.51%

Madhya Pradesh (6 seats) - 55.32%

Rajasthan (13 seats) - 59.97%

Uttar Pradesh (8 seats) - 53.12%

Karnataka (14 seats) - 64.51%

Jammu Kashmir (1 seat) - 67.22%

Bihar (5 seats) - 54.17%

Lok Sabha polls - phase 2 in numbers

According to the Election Commission, in this phase, more than 1.6 lakh polling officers were deployed at 1,67,000 polling centres to facilitate the casting of ballots by 15.88 crore voters.

These include 3.48 lakh first-time voters, and 3.28 crore young voters aged between 20 and 29.

On the other hand, there were 14.78 lakh registered voters aged 85 years or above, 42,226 voters aged over 100 years, and 1.47 lakh differently-abled voters, who were to be provided with the option to cast their votes comfortably from their homes.

Out of 1,202 candidates in the fray, 1,098 were male, 102 were female, and 2 were of the third gender.

Lok Sabha Elections Phase 3 on May 7

Phase 3 for Lok Sabha Elections 2024 is scheduled to take place on May 7. This phase will include 95 constituencies along with the 25 of Gujarat. 12 States and Union territories included in this phase are Assam (4 seats), Bihar (5 seats), Chhattisgarh (7 seats), Goa (2 seats), Gujarat (25 seats), Karnataka (14 seats), Madhya Pradesh (9 seats), Maharashtra (11 seats), Uttar Pradesh (10 seats), West Bengal (4 seats), Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (2 seats), and Jammu and Kashmir (1 seat).

Election won’t be taking place on Gujarat’s Surat Lok Sabha constituency as BJP’s Mukesh Dalal has been elected unopposed.
