Masking of PAN, Aadhar, Voter ID deadline for KYC extended till Jan 20
The Government of India has taken steps to enhance the security of Know Your Customer (KYC) data, and to prevent misuse, a new ‘masking sensitive KYC identifiers’ like PAN, Aadhar, Voter ID, and Driving Licence numbers.
Masked KYC involves concealing sensitive information in customer records shared via the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCRR). Instead of revealing the complete KYC identifier, only the last four digits will be shown.
Further extending the December deadline, the CKYCRR has granted an extension until January 20, 2025.
“This is in continuation to the communique CKYC/2024/04 dated October 17, 2024 and CKYC/2024/06 dated December 04, 2024 on the subject matter,” the communique read.
“In view of requests received from various Reporting Entities, it has been decided to defer the date of go live for masking of KYC Identifier from December 16, 2024, after 8 pm to January 20, 2025, after 8pm,” it read.
Why is masking a KYC identifier necessary?
The updated system will display only the last four digits of KYC identifier documents, including Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID Card, Driving Licence, and others, while keeping the remaining details concealed.
The CKYCRR claimed that the new security measure is to safeguard user data. This measure allows restricting access to KYC information based on unique IP addresses.
