Four killed, over 300 injured in violence in U’khand over madrasa demolition

The Kumaon city Haldwani has been grappling with violence on Feb 8, where at least four people were killed and over 300 injured in the violence-struck Banbhoolpura area, Nainital district magistrate Vandana Singh said.
The deceased were identified as Johny and his son Anas, Aaris and Faheem.
What happened in Haldwani?
After several establishments, illegally constructed on government land, were demolished in Banbhoolpura Feb 8, enraged locals pelted stones on police personnel and mediapersons.
The demolished establishments also included a mosque and a madrasa, which were illegally constructed, according to Haldwani mayor Pankaj Upadhyay.
Several police personnel sustained injuries in the attack, sources said. The mob also damaged an excavating machine and set 70 vehicles afire, after which authorities imposed a curfew in the area and gave shoot-at-sight orders.
Heavy deployment of police personnel has been made in the city. The curfew will remain imposed in Haldwani city till further orders.
Taking note of the violence, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami convened a high-level meeting over the violence and appealed to the people to maintain peace.
As the tension erupts, district magistrate Singh also ceased the internet service on the night of the incident.
Markets and all schools have also been instructed to remain closed today (Feb 9).
