Mumbai police Monday cautioned the public against unverified claims circulating on social media about missing and kidnapped children.

Officials said such misinformation is creating unnecessary fear and panic among citizens.

“Certain social media handles are deliberately misrepresenting data and indulging in rumour-mongering regarding cases of missing and kidnapped children. We categorically deny these claims. Action, including the registration of FIRs against those spreading false information and creating public panic, is under process,” the X handle of Mumbai Police said.

Earlier, reports noted that Mumbai Police were placed on high alert following a sharp surge in missing persons cases, with 12 minor children reported missing across the city within 36 hours.

Of the missing children, it was claimed that eight were girls, prompting serious concern among law enforcement agencies over the possible involvement of organised human trafficking networks.

It was believed that missing children complaints were registered from multiple police jurisdictions, including Shivaji Nagar (four cases), Sakinaka (two), Antop Hill (two), and one case each from Oshiwara, Mankhurd, Bangur Nagar and Ghatkopar, with detailed descriptions of missing children.

Note: The story about multiple kidnapping and missing children was reported on this portal, however, was updated later as per Mumbai Police’s clarification.
