A woman who seems to be 30 to 35 years old allegedly stole a pair of gold bangles worth ₹2.5 lakh from a jewellery shop at Geeta Mandir in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening, police said.
According to Kagadapith police, Pankajbhai Futermal Soni, owner of Kalyani Gold Palace, the theft took place between 6.30 pm and 6.45 pm at his shop located near Majurgam, Geeta Mandir area.
Soni, 33, a resident of Kankaria, told police that he was present at the shop when the woman arrived posing as a customer interested in purchasing gold bangles. The shop salesman, showed her several designs of bangles.
Police said the woman selected a pair of bangles but allegedly claimed they were beyond her budget and asked whether a lighter version could be made at a lower price. The salesman reportedly assured her that similar bangles could be customised according to her budget.
The woman then allegedly told the salesman that she would return with her husband before leaving the shop.
Shortly afterwards, while placing the jewellery back into the locker, the salesman discovered that one pair of bangles was missing. Upon checking the CCTV footage installed at the shop, the staff allegedly found visuals showing the woman stealing the bangles while the salesman was distracted.
According to the complaint, the stolen bangles weighed 26.660 grams in total, including 16.920 grams of gold and 9.940 grams of copper, and were valued at approximately ₹2.5 lakh.
After informing his father about the incident, the complainant approached the police and lodged a formal complaint against the unidentified woman.
Kagadapith police has registered a case of theft and initiated an investigation.
