Wedding celebration in Ahmedabad turns violent after dispute over food, cross-complaints filed

A wedding celebration in Ahmedabad’s Kubernagar area allegedly turned violent after an argument over food escalated into a clash between members of the bride’s and groom’s families, leaving several persons injured and prompting cross-complaints at Meghaninagar Police Station.

According to the first complaint filed by Kashish, 23, a resident of Jahangirpuri in Delhi, the altercation began during a wedding function held at Sindhu Hall in the bungalow area of Kubernagar on the night of May 11.

Kashish told police that her marriage had been fixed with Sagar Vani, a resident of Vastral, and her family had arrived in Ahmedabad on May 10 for the ceremonies. She alleged that after the wedding procession and dinner programme concluded aaround 10.30 pm, a dispute arose over the quality of pulao served during the meal. Though the matter was initially settled, tensions allegedly resurfaced later in the night.

In her complaint, Kashish alleged that around 1 am, Sagar, his brother Amrit and several of their associates arrived at the hall where the bride’s family was staying and began verbally abusing her father over the earlier dispute.

She further alleged that one of Amrit’s associates attacked her father with a knife, injuring his left hand, while another man identified as Chetan allegedly stabbed her aunt Sarika on the left palm when she intervened. Kashish stated that she, along with her grandmother, mother and brother Ritik, attempted to rescue the injured family members during the altercation.

According to the complaint, Sagar, Amrit, Chetan and two unidentified persons then allegedly assaulted members of the bride’s family. During the scuffle, Kashish alleged that her gold mangalsutra and another gold ornament worn by her aunt went missing.

The injured persons, including Kashish’s father, aunt and grandmother, were later shifted to Civil Hospital for treatment.

However, in a counter-complaint filed by Akash Singh Parihar, 30, a labourer from Amraiwadi and a member of the groom’s side, a different version of events was presented.

Akash alleged that during the dinner programme, an argument broke out after Ritik, a relative from the bride’s side, criticised the food served at the function. Police were reportedly called to the venue at the time, following which the matter was temporarily resolved.

According to Akash’s complaint, tensions escalated again around 1.30 am when Ritik allegedly began abusing members of the groom’s party over the earlier argument. Akash claimed that while Sagar, Amrit and others attempted to calm the situation, Ritik, along with Kashish’s father Kamlesh and another unidentified person, allegedly attacked them using an iron cooking pot and sharp weapons.

The complainant alleged that he sustained injuries to the head, while his friend Suraj suffered injuries to the head and face. Another individual identified as Madan Naidu was allegedly injured on the left shoulder while trying to intervene.

Both groups later approached Civil Hospital for treatment before lodging complaints with the police.

Meghaninagar police have registered cross-cases in connection with the incident and initiated an investigation. Officials said statements of witnesses and CCTV footage from the venue would be examined to ascertain the sequence of events.
