Three R K University students en route Diu killed in road accident on Rajkot–Bhavnagar highway

An accident near Atkot’s Jangvad village on the Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway claimed the lives of three students of Rajkot’s R K University on early Saturday morning, while nine others sustained injuries.

According to police, a group of 12 students from R K University, all hostel residents, had taken permission on Friday and rented a self-drive Innova car to visit Amreli, Dwarka, and Diu. After leaving Rajkot, they halted briefly for refreshments before resuming their journey.

Around a kilometer before Jangvad village, the vehicle overturned on a curve after the driver lost control due to overspeeding. Locals gathered at the spot and alerted the 108 emergency service and police. Rescue teams arrived quickly and pulled the injured students out of the overturned car.

Three students lost their lives in the mishap, Naresh Kodavati (19), resident Andhra Pradesh, Harsha Mothe (17), resident of Hyderabad, Telangana, Afrid Syed (19), resident of Andhra Pradesh, who was driving the vehicle.

One student died on the spot, the second succumbed on the way to Atkot hospital, and the third passed away during treatment at a private hospital in Rajkot.

Two more students sustained fractures and serious injuries and were shifted to a private hospital for further treatment. The remaining seven suffered minor injuries and were declared safe after medical attention.

Police have shifted the bodies to the Civil Hospital for forensic postmortem. 

A case of accidental death has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
