Over 1,900 people injured in road accidents during Independence Day long weekend in Gujarat

Surge in road accidents in Gujarat (representative image)

During the three-day mini vacation in Gujarat— Independence Day followed by Janmashtami and Sunday (August 15-16-17), road accidents in Gujarat caused injuries to over 1,900 people.

According to information received from Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) 108 service, Gujarat recorded 635, 596, and 692 road accidents on August 15, 16, and 17, respectively. 

Among them, Ahmedabad reported the highest number, with 268 injured people calling 108. Out of these, 81 were injured on August 15, 76 on August 16, and 111 on August 17.

In terms of the highest number of accident cases during these three days, Ahmedabad ranked first, followed by Surat with 182 cases, Rajkot with 118, Vadodara with 109, and Bhavnagar with 94. The lowest number of cases was reported in Dang district, with only 7 people injured in road accidents.

One of the horrific accidents that made headlines claimed the lives of eight members of a family on the Surendranagar-Lakhtar highway on Sunday afternoon. 

The family from Dhandhuka’s Zinzar village was travelling to Surendranagar to visit their relatives. Later, when they were en route to shopping, their car collided with another between Zamar and the villages of Surendranagar.

The collision resulted in the family’s car catching fire, and a total of eight family members, including children and women, were charred to death.
