Teenager dies by suicide, father accuses friend of abetment after video found on phone

A 17-year-old boy in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area allegedly died by suicide after recording a video in which he purportedly blamed a friend for subjecting him to physical and mental harassment, prompting police to register a case of abetment to suicide.

According to the FIR registered at Meghaninagar Police Station, the deceased, Pruthvisinh Ravindrasinh Rajput (17), was found hanging at his family’s residence on the night of April 22.

His father, Ravindrasinh Laxmansinh Rajput (49), a private stock market dealer, stated in his complaint that he returned home from work around 8.30 pm and later saw his son go upstairs after dinner. Around 10.15 pm, when he went to the third floor of the house, he allegedly found Pruthvisinh hanging from an iron angle using a dupatta.

Family members immediately untied him and called emergency services, after which he was rushed to Asarwa Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 11.33 pm.

Police initially registered an accidental death case and sent the body for post-mortem before handing it over to the family for last rites.

The case took a turn after the family later accessed the deceased’s mobile phone and allegedly discovered a video recorded by the teenager shortly before his death.

According to the complainant, the video showed Pruthvisinh stating that he had been involved in an altercation with his friend, identified as Manav Bhagwandas Vaishnav, and alleging that he had been assaulted and subjected to mental and physical harassment by him.

Based on the contents of the video, the father alleged that the harassment by Vaishnav drove his son to take the extreme step.

Police have now registered a case against the accused for alleged abetment to suicide and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
