Surat schools under fire safety audit after Delhi and Lucknow fire incidents

Following recent fire incidents in Delhi and Lucknow, the Surat Fire and Emergency Service Department has launched a city-wide fire safety audit in schools. The initiative aims to ensure the safety of thousands of students and verify whether educational institutions are fully prepared to handle fire emergencies. Fire department teams have started visiting schools across the city to inspect their safety arrangements.

During the inspections, officials are checking whether important fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems, hydrants, smoke detectors, and emergency exit routes are available and functioning properly. Teams are also examining maintenance records to ensure that the equipment has been serviced regularly and refilled whenever required. Schools are being asked to produce documents related to the upkeep of these systems.

The audit is not limited to checking equipment alone. Fire department officials are also assessing how prepared school staff members are to respond in the event of a fire. Teachers, administrative staff, and other employees are being questioned about emergency procedures, evacuation plans, and the proper use of fire extinguishers.

Special attention is being given to emergency evacuation arrangements inside school buildings. Officials are reviewing whether emergency exits are clearly marked and free from obstruction. They are also checking whether schools conduct regular fire drills and educate students about safety measures, evacuation routes, and assembly points. The preparedness of designated emergency response teams within schools is also under review.

According to fire department authorities, obtaining a Fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) is only the first step. Schools must continuously maintain all safety equipment and ensure that it remains operational throughout the year. Officials stressed that merely installing fire safety devices to meet legal requirements is not enough, proper training, awareness, and regular practice are equally important for effective emergency response.

The inspection drive will continue in schools across Surat over the coming days. Schools found lacking in safety measures will be advised to make immediate improvements. Authorities have warned that strict action may be taken against institutions where serious negligence or violations of fire safety rules are discovered.
