A 37-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a speeding truck near the southern end of the Ambli Vakil Saheb Bridge in Ahmedabad’s Bopal area on Wednesday night, police said.

According to the M Division Traffic Police Station, the accident took place around 8.45 pm on May 6 when the victim, identified as Sukhdev Dhana Koted, was crossing the road on foot.

Police said the truck driver, allegedly driving in a rash and negligent manner that endangered public safety, knocked down the pedestrian, causing severe injuries. Sukhdev died on the spot due to the impact of the collision.

The accused driver allegedly fled from the scene along with the truck immediately after the accident.

Following information about the incident, personnel from the M Division Traffic Police rushed to the spot and initiated an investigation. The victim’s younger brother, Dinesh Dhana Koted, later lodged a complaint against the unidentified truck driver.

Police registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

During the course of the investigation, police traced the truck involved in the accident to SP Ring Road near Lapkaman village, where it had allegedly been abandoned by the driver. Officials said the truck driver was subsequently detained and further investigation into the case is under way.

The truck involved in the accident bore registration number of Rajasthan, police said.
