Overseas dreams making Gujarat vulnerable to exploitation
"No agency or agent has any authority to provide visas"
Gujaratis’ insatiable desire for overseas dreams often ends with losing assets, funds, and even lives to the treacherous plans of illegal immigration agents.
In search of a better life in the US, Canada, and European countries, the people from remote areas of Gujarat fall prey to tropes of illegal immigration, which the agents make them believe is an ‘easier’ way to reach overseas.
Can illegal immigration be averted?
“Due to a complex citizenship and work visa process existing in the US, the craze for other countries except the US has soared among Indians. This has resulted in a 32% increase in visa registrations after the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the senior general manager, VFS Global, Soubhik Mitra.
However, various elements are taking advantage of this surge and deceiving common people, he added.
Mitra emphasised that this illegal immigration menace can be averted if people understand that only authorised agencies and the government can process visas.
“In fact, no agency or agent has any authority to provide visas. It is imperative to be cautious while applying for visas,” said Mitra.
The Crime Investigation Department (CID Crime) in Gujarat has been investigating a similar lead of agents exploiting the aspirants and trying to decode the illegal immigration scam.
On Feb 24, Chicago police also busted an accused related to Dingucha’s Patel family who lost their lives in January 2022, trying to cross the Canada-US border illegally.
