As social media overflows with Mother’s Day tributes celebrating women and motherhood, official figures from Ahmedabad paint a shockingly contrasting reality. The city recorded only 886 girls born for every 1,000 boys in 2025, exposing the deep gender imbalance that continues to persist despite years of campaigns on equality and women’s empowerment.

The figures also show a decline in the child sex ratio over the past three years. In 2022, the ratio stood at 898 girls for every 1,000 boys, indicating a drop of 10 girls during the period.

Government schemes and awareness programmes have increasingly focused on encouraging families to value daughters equally and improve opportunities for women and girls.

Many families today publicly express the view that sons and daughters are equal, and acceptance of girl children has improved significantly compared to previous decades, social workers say.

However, the declining birth ratio in Ahmedabad suggests that societal attitudes reflected in official statistics continue to lag behind public rhetoric on gender equality.

Interestingly, the birth ratio of girls in rural parts of Ahmedabad district remains higher than that recorded within Ahmedabad city limits, despite the city’s rapid economic and social development over the past five decades.
