Yet another incident of serious negligence during construction work has claimed an innocent life on the city’s SG Highway. Near YMCA Club, a barricade placed for traffic diversion during ongoing bridge construction suddenly fell, causing a passing rickshaw to overturn. One passenger died in the incident, while five people sustained injured.

According to available information, a rickshaw carrying five passengers was traveling from Vaishnodevi to Sanathal when the accident occurred. A heavy metal barricade (sheet) placed on the ongoing construction fell onto the rickshaw due to strong wind pressure created by a passing bus. The barricade had reportedly not been properly secured, leading to the incident.

The rickshaw driver survived, but a young man named Ajay, who was seated at the back, died in the incident. The other passengers sustained serious injuries. All of them were labourers who had come to Ahmedabad for construction work.

As soon as the incident was reported, local police and the 108 emergency team rushed to the spot. The injured were rescued from the wreckage and shifted to Civil Hospital, where doctors declared one laborer dead. The others are currently undergoing treatment in critical condition.

Preliminary findings suggest that the barricades used for traffic diversion were not properly fixed. The lack of adherence to safety standards appears to have caused the accident. Questions are now being raised about whether strict action will be taken against the contractor responsible.
