Man at ration shop registered as member, BJP drive under scrutiny again
Updated: Sep 27th, 2024
The ongoing BJP membership drive is again embroiled in controversy, with reports of individuals being registered without their consent. The latest incident involves a farmer named Jagmal Pithia, who claims he was registered as a BJP member while visiting a ration shop in Junagadh. Earlier a patient in Visnagar was registered as a member without his consent.
According to Pithia, he went to purchase grains and was asked for his phone and was registered as a BJP member without his knowledge. When he received the message confirming his membership, he realised he had become a member of the party.
He was prompted to contact party workers for cancellation. Despite numerous attempts, he reported that no one responded to his calls.
Audio recordings of Pithia’s conversations with BJP workers have since gone viral, capturing his frustration. In the recordings, he expressed his discontent, stating, “When you took my phone yesterday at the shop, you should have asked for my permission to make me a member of your party.” He added, “You took my phone under the guise of verifying my eligibility for affordable grains. Why was I made a member of BJP without my knowledge? I have no interest in political parties.”
The farmer’s situation highlights a growing trend where individuals, including hospital patients at instances, have reportedly been registered as BJP members without their awareness.
The BJP is yet to address these allegations or clarify its membership campaign procedures.
