Kankaria zoo uses air coolers to protect animals from heatwave: Ahmedabad
Kankaria Zoo has made special arrangements to protect animals from extreme summer heat as temperatures in Ahmedabad cross 40° C. The zoo administration has installed air coolers, green shade nets and special cooling systems to keep wildlife safe and comfortable during the heatwave.
The zoo currently houses around 2,190 animals, birds and reptiles. Around 38 to 40 air coolers have been placed near the enclosures of lions, tigers, leopards and elephants. Advanced cooling systems like Earth Tube Heat Exchanger (ETHE) and geo-thermal aeration are also being used for nocturnal animals. Green nets and shaded shelters have been arranged to protect animals from direct sunlight.
Veterinary doctors are continuously monitoring the animals to prevent dehydration and heat-related problems. Animals are being given cooling foods like watermelon, sugarcane and other fruits. Glucose and ORS powder are also being mixed in drinking water to maintain hydration. Regular vaccination, deworming and medical check-ups are being carried out for all animals.
According to zoo officials, more than 77.72 lakh people have visited the zoo in the last five years. To attract more tourists, work on a new walk in aviary is currently in progress and new animals are also expected to arrive soon. Online ticket booking and zoo guide services have also been introduced for visitors convenience.
Zoo authorities said summer management plans are prepared every year to ensure the health and safety of wildlife during rising temperatures. Staff members regularly clean animal enclosures and refill water pools to maintain hygiene and provide relief from the heat.
Officials added that awareness boards and instructions have been placed across the zoo campus to guide visitors during hot weather conditions. The administration has appealed to tourists to stay hydrated and avoid disturbing animals during peak afternoon hours, as many species become sensitive and less active in extreme heat.
