International E-Waste Day

Against the growing dependability of human life on electronics, heavy amounts of e-waste or electronic waste are produced every year as a repercussion.

To raise awareness for this phenomenon, October 14 is globally celebrated as ‘International E-Waste Day’.

Among all the measures taken globally to deal with this waste type, Gujarat has accounted for over a lakh metric tonnes of e-waste being processed and disposed of in the last three years.

Notably, e-waste comprises the unprocessed disposal of mobile phones, television sets, computers, chargers, GPS devices, modems, and headphones, among other electronic devices.

Pollution caused by e-waste has been escalating across the world at alarming levels. This phenomenon could also be attributed to the escalating use of electronic devices.

A major factor behind e-waste being a serious threat is the presence of environmentally harmful metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium in it. These metals are major contributors to air, water, and soil pollution. Thus, proper disposal and recycling of e-waste becomes mandatory.

Iron, copper, plastics, and other crucial elements procured after disposing of e-waste are recycled and used in other devices, vehicles, and manufacturing processes.
