The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to revamp its door-to-door waste collection system in order to improve efficiency and cleanliness in the city.
A proposal has been placed for approval in the standing committee meeting to assign work to different agencies for ten years for door-to-door waste collection from all seven zones of Ahmedabad at a total cost of ₹3,380 cr.
The annual cost of door-to-door waste collection has been increased to ₹240 crore.
According to the proposal placed before the standing committee, there are more than 21 lakh residential and commercial properties in Ahmedabad. Door-to-door waste collection has been done in the city since 2017.
The municipal commissioner conducted a study of the door-to-door waste collection method in cities like Surat, Indore, Mumbai, and Jaipur through a consultant and made some important suggestions regarding the method in the city.
New door-to-door waste collection system features
Currently, 1100 vehicles are being used by the agencies, which will be increased to 1,450.
As per the plan, after five years of operation, these vehicles will be phased out and replaced with new vehicles.
All the vehicles will be monitored through a GPS system. With the help of app, citizens will be able to get updates on door-to-door waste collection operations.
Waste will be collected from gate systems in societies, apartments, etc. Moreover, waste from all religious settings will be sent in separate vehicles for processing.
Under the new system, waste collection will be done daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. from residential units from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. from commercial units.
Currently, wet and dry waste are collected separately in the door-to-door waste collection vehicle. From now on, household hazardous waste and sanitary waste will also be collected separately in addition to wet and dry waste.
