Farmers in Gujarat protested against the government over the installation of electricity poles on agricultural land. Following the protests, the government has now moved towards formulating a new policy for electricity poles.
Farmers had claimed that these power infrastructure projects cause damage to their valuable land and have been demanding proper compensation for the losses.
Amid the ongoing protests, the Gujarat government is considering formulating a separate policy to protect the economic interests of farmers affected by installation of electricity poles and transmission lines. The proposed policy is expected to make compensation rules more transparent and beneficial for farmers.
The government stated that it has always supported farmers and has resolved several complicated issues in the past. Officials have also emphasised dialogue and planned to organise rural-level meetings to prevent the agitation from spreading further.
Farmers have been demanding fair compensation for the loss of agricultural land through electricity infrastructure for a long time. Political parties, including the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, have also stepped in to support the farmers’ concerns.
Farmer organisations have maintained that they will continue their protest until the new policy is officially announced.
The farmers have stated that the movement is non-political and have decided not to allow political leaders on the protest stage, despite allegations that parties are trying to gain influence over the agitation.
