Gujarat Board Exams: Mathematics paper easy, cheating cases soar

Updated: Mar 14th, 2024

In the ongoing Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB) exam, worries were eased for class 10 and 12 students as mathematics and chemistry papers, usually challenging, were reportedly manageable.

In the morning schedule, 71,856 were present on standard mathematics papers, and 393 were absent.

While in basic mathematics, out of 7,64,247, a total of 20,565 students were absent.

According to subject teachers, school authorities, and experts, both papers were reportedly one of the easiest maths papers till now.

In previous years, maths has been a subject where a large number of students failed the class 10 board exams.

This year, the board has introduced a 30% weight to objective-based questions in the class 10 maths paper.

Class 12 board exams

A total of 1,422 students in class 12 (science) were absent out of 1,29,613 who had chemistry papers.

Students said that the chemistry subject paper was easier than the physics paper this year.

In the economics paper of general stream class 12, out of 3,16,967 students, 3,169 were absent.

More than 25,000 students were absent in the board examination overall.

Cheating cases

This year recorded the highest cases of misconduct and cheating, with a total of 11 cases in just one day.

During the examination on Mar 13, there was one more cheating incident reported from Ahmedabad’s Pragati School in Khokhra.

A class 10 student appearing for the class 10 basic mathematics exam was caught using a mobile phone during the exam.

She was a repeater who hid the phone in his undergarments, as per reports.

She was caught about an hour and a half after the paper began when a supervisor noticed her suspicious behaviour.

The student was reportedly keeping her mobile phone between her legs and looking at answers on YouTube.

Zonal officials said that the student’s mobile phone was confiscated, but she did not take any photographs or leak the question paper.

According to GSEB rules, the exam centre authorities informed the zonal officer, and following protocol, a police complaint has been filed.

Other cheating cases from the class 10 paper were reported from Surat, Amreli, Anand, and Junagadh.

In the class 12 (science) exam, one misconduct and cheating case was reported from a centre in Surat.

Whereas in the general stream’s economics paper, one case was reported in Jamnagar and four in Anand.

Anand, often regarded as ‘vidhyanagar’, is on alert due to mass copying cases in its centre.
