During Gujarat Technological University’s (GTU) semester exams, a record-high of 596 cheating and malpractice incidents were registered for a single semester.

The university has penalised them all according to their levels of offence. Most of the perpetrators caught were from the university’s diploma engineering department.

Cheating cases expected to surpass 700

GTU recently concluded its summer semester examinations, and the university released the number of cheating and malpractice incidents registered during these summer semester exams.

596 cheating cases were registered in the semesters two to eight and allowed-to-keep-terms (ATKT) exams of all the university’s departments.

These are the highest-ever cheating numbers recorded for the GTU, and these are just the numbers from the phase-1 examinations. The number of cheating cases are likely to surpass even 700 after the numbers of phase-2 exams will be revealed.

Most cases from diploma engineering dept

The busted 596 students were reported to have been either carrying a chit, a book, a mobile phone, or any other cheating means with them.

The highest number of students, 298, were from diploma engineering. Another 185 students were from degree engineering, 46 were from B Pharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy), 28 were from MBA (Masters of Business Administration), 11 were from MCA (Masters in Computer Application), and the remaining 19 were from other courses.

All of these busted students will be penalised under level-1 to level-6 penalties, except for 11 students. These 11 students are to be penalised under level-7 and their scale of punishment will be decided by the university’s UFM (unfair means) committee, after whom they are to be presented.
