Deesa blast: Father-son duo on remand till Apr 11, police to probe child labour possibility

In the Deesa blast case that claimed the lives of 21 workers, a local court on Thursday granted police remand to two key accused Khubchand Renumal Mohanani and his son Deepak Khubchand Mohanani until April 11.
The duo was presented before the Deesa court, where the investigating officer submitted a detailed remand plea citing serious lapses in the factory and the need for further interrogation.
The government presented 16 key points justifying the request for a 10-day remand, including the need to trace other potential suspects and suppliers. The court, granted remand until 11.30 am on April 11.
The blast, which occurred in a rented godown in Deesa, exposed an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit operating under the name ‘Deepak Traders’. The explosion not only caused multiple casualties but also raised alarm about labour violations, including alleged use of child labour, prompting a deeper probe.
During the court hearing, the police officially acknowledged that the godown was being used as a fully operational firecracker factory. Explosive raw materials recovered from the site have been sent for forensic analysis.
Authorities revealed that the accused have not yet disclosed the source of the raw materials or the supply chain involved in the operation.
Investigators are also examining whether any other individuals were partners in the factory and are probing the father-son duo’s movements post-blast, including a reported trip from Deesa to Sabarkantha via Palanpur.
