Congress turncoats make Gandhinagar an easy fight for HM Amit Shah

Updated: Apr 6th, 2024

Gandhinagar, once considered Congress’ fortress, is today believed to be a one-sided cakewalk for union home minister Amit Shah. Ten years ago, it was a tough to breach constituency, but today, not a single Congress member holds any important position here.

Gandhinagar consists of Gandhinagar North, Kalol, Sanand, Ghatlodia, Vejalpur, Naranpura, and Sabarmati, and has a total electorate of about 20 lakhs including local bodies like taluka panchayat zilla panchayat, and corporations, most of them ruled by BJP.

In 2017 , Congress candidate Dr CJ Chavda won in Gandhinagar North Assembly, and in 2019, Chavda lost by more than five lakh votes. Now, Chavda has resigned and joined the BJP, and is running for the Bijapur seat from BJP, while Sonal Patel is pitted against home minister in Gandhinagar from Congress.

With  only BJP incumbents in Gandhinagar zilla panchayat, corporation, and in publicly elected posts, there is no competition for Shah, due to the lack of Congress candidates.

Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) was established in the year 2010 and the first elections were held in 2011. Congress won 18 and BJP only managed 15 seats. However, BJP came to power in 2012 with Mahendrasinh Rana of Congress and three corporators joining BJP. Similarly, 16 members of both Congress and BJP won in the GMC elections in 2016. Here, BJP came back to power after Praveen Patel of Congress joined BJP.

Only two Congress candidates won the 2022 Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections in which Ankit Barot and Gajendrasinh Vaghela became corporators who resigned from Congress last week and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Harsh Sanghavi.

Barot had close ties with the CJ Chavda group and he was supposed to resign when CJ Chavda resigned, but instead of resigning at that time, he resigned a month and a half later.

Along with Ankit Barot and Gajendrasinh Vaghela, around 800 Gandhinagar ex-sarpanches, ex-corporators and various community leaders have joined the BJP with their supporters.

Then on Apr 4, two Congress members of Gandhinagar district panchayat, Rasmi Thakor and Kanti Thakor, resigned and three members of Kalol taluka panchayat have also submitted their resignations.
