The Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University (HNGU) in Patan has been accused of altering supplementary exam results for three students in 2021, passing them fraudulently.
Despite evidence of misconduct, the government is yet to file a formal complaint, the Opposition claims. Opposition party members add that they will now present the case to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and seek legal action.
Leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Amit Chavda and the Congress MLA for Patan, Dr Kirit Patel, held a press conference accusing BJP leaders of involvement in the scam. They criticized the BJP government for allegedly protecting those responsible.
An investigation led by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Pankaj Kumar uncovered that 12 supplementary papers for three students were altered.
Thereafter, the Education Secretary demanded action within seven days in a letter dated Dec 22, 2022. However, no police action has been taken in the two years since the incident came to light, the Congress leaders said.
Dr Patel said he had submitted a report to the Gujarat High Court, naming Chemistry faculty member JJ Vora and three students as accused. Some officials implicated in the scam have since retired with full benefits, raising questions about accountability, he added.
