Cash-filled bag worth ₹4.59 lakh stolen from BMW after distraction tactic near Science City

A 33-year-old architect from Ahmedabad was allegedly robbed of a cash-filled bag containing ₹4.59 lakh after unidentified assailants used a distraction tactic to break into his luxury car near Science City on Thursday evening, police said.

According to the complaint lodged with the Sola High Court police, Jagrut Shah, a resident of Bopal and proprietor of J S A Architect, was travelling in his BMW M2 car when the incident occurred near Vedanta Hospital on Science City Road around 5.15 pm on May 7.

Police said Shah had earlier visited a PM Angadiya office near Blooming Campus on Science City Road to collect ₹3 lakh sent by a friend. He reportedly placed the amount in a black bag along with another ₹1.59 lakh that he already possessed, taking the total cash in the bag to ₹4.59 lakh.

The complainant stated that he placed the bag on the front passenger seat of his BMW and was driving towards his office at The Capital building on Science City Road.

As he reached near Vedanta Hospital, he allegedly heard a noise from behind the vehicle. At the same time, a man riding a black motorcycle, wearing a helmet and covering his face with a handkerchief, gestured to him to stop the car.

Believing there was an issue with the vehicle, Shah stopped the car and stepped out after locking it, police said. While the biker allegedly distracted him by calling him forward, another unidentified man approached the vehicle, smashed the glass of the front passenger-side door and fled with the black bag containing the cash.

The accused escaped from the spot on motorcycles before the complainant could react. The broken window of the BMW is estimated to have caused an additional loss of around ₹11,000 to ₹16,000, according to the complaint.

Following the incident, Shah approached the Sola High Court Police Station and lodged a complaint against two unidentified persons for theft and criminal damage.

Police have registered an FIR and initiated an investigation. Officials said CCTV footage from the area and nearby establishments is being examined to identify the accused.
