Ahmedabad police chief chairs crime conference notes drop in first party crimes

A high-level crime conference was held at the office of the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner on Tuesday, chaired by Commissioner G S Malik. The conference was attended by all police inspectors and senior officers, including those of the rank of JCP, DCP, and ACP and above. The agenda included a comprehensive review of police performance, crime statistics, antisocial activity monitoring, and the city's growing public-private CCTV surveillance project.

Commissioner Malik said that the law and order situation in Ahmedabad remains under control, with data showing a steady decline in first-party crimes over the past three years. As per figures shared during the meeting:

Till June 2023: 6,534 first-party crimes

Till June 2024: 5,075 first-party crimes

Till June 2025: 4,853 first-party crimes

This consistent decline, Malik said, reflects the impact of enhanced policing measures, increased surveillance, and community participation in law enforcement.

22,774 public CCTV cameras installed so far

The commissioner had issued an order in May 2024 to install CCTV cameras across the city, instructing police station heads to mobilise public support and explain the importance of surveillance infrastructure. As of June 2025, 22,774 CCTV cameras have been installed in Ahmedabad through community participation.

From March 2, 2025, the feed from these CCTV cameras began streaming into local police stations and the central control room. At present, 3,088 cameras are being monitored at local police stations, while 2,963 feeds are accessible in the control room.

Malik noted that the availability of CCTV footage has significantly improved the detection of crimes, particularly property-related offences such as loot, burglary, theft, and raids.

Detection rates of key property crimes (Jan 1 – June 30):

Crime Type- 2024 (Cases) / Detected (2024) / Detection% (2024) / 2025 (Cases) / Detected (2025) / Detection% (2025)

Raid 3 3 100% 3 3 100%

Loot 55 48 87.27% 35 35 100%

Burglary 170 72 42.35% 172 81 57.17%

Theft 1,847 501 30.87% 1,753 655 37.38%

The commissioner said that the increase in detection rates is directly tied to the widespread presence of CCTV cameras, which are proving especially valuable in serious and sensitive crimes such as murder, assault, rioting, and robbery.

Strong action against anti-social elements

The conference also reviewed action taken under PASA, externment, and demolition laws against antisocial elements. From January to June 2025, PASA action was taken against 573 individuals. Efforts to curb drug-related offences under the NDPS provisions were also assessed. In addition, officials reviewed progress in tackling rising cybercrime cases, a growing concern in urban policing.
